Meaning in Life Essay

People are constantly looking for life’s purpose. Many have pondered the meaning of life throughout the two hundred thousand years of human history. Among them was Leo Tolstoy. He was a Russian writer who wrote about his journey to discover the purpose of his life. He had the strong opinion that life has no purpose. Another person who contemplated the meaning of life was David Swenson. According to him, a man is meant to be happy, and a life devoid of happiness is not a life at all. I believe that life has no purpose, despite the fact that there are many differing viewpoints on the matter.

Life, according to some, is all about faith. Despite Tolstoy’s belief that life has no purpose, he acknowledged that those who practice faith appear to understand their purpose in life. It is a fact that individuals who practice religion tend to be happier than those who don’t. When a religious person becomes ill, they may believe that the illness is a sign from God. On the other hand, non-religious people might struggle with the fact that it can be caused by a random chance and how unlucky the person is. In my opinion, if there is a true meaning in life, we do not have to find something to believe.

Swenson stated that life is about happiness. He said, “All men are endowed by nature with a desire for happiness. A human life without happiness or hope of happiness is not a life, but rather a death in life.” Happiness is one of the emotions. It is impossible to feel only happiness because happiness is influenced by other emotions. If children in a poor country move to a wealthy country, they would appreciate that they have food, clothes, and a safe house. They would feel happier for a normal life than those who grew up in a wealthy country. People can feel happy because they know what sadness and hopelessness are. Also, pursuing happiness is endless. Humans never satisfy with what they have or what they earned.

In my opinion, there is no meaning in life, and that is why humans always look for something to believe. Humans have existed for so many years, but we will all die and extinct eventually. Everything will be meaningless when we die. Some people might argue that individuals advance our society, and that helps our offspring even if we die. That is true, but that offspring and society will be gone eventually. Believing in something is a mechanism that human created to survive. If people accept there is no meaning in life, their lives would be desperate.

These factors lead me to believe that life has no meaning. Living a happier life is possible for those who practice faith than those without faith, but people had to believe in something because there is no meaning in life. People cannot feel happy all the time because it is influenced by other negative emotions. Having faith can create meaning in life, but that indicates that people have to find the faith to survive because there is no true meaning in life.
