The organization and combination of activities of a business or process of controlling these activities is called management and the person who is responsible for mentoring all these activities is called manager. Some managers are source of inspiration and motivation for their team, others fail miserably to lead and engage their team. Effective managers are those who make sure that each member of team effectively so the company can achieve its goals. In other words, an effective manager is one who makes best possible use of available resources to achieve goals (McCrimmon, 2011). Self-motivation, time management, and ability to resolve conflicts in team are few necessary skills required to be an effective manager. Moreover, nowadays managers are expected to be good leaders, planners, organizers, and innovators who can foster innovations.

Qualities of Effective Managers

Time Management

It is a common observation that we all have 24 hours, but some people are more productive in their time. Simple answer to this situation is people who are good at time management are more productive. A brief description of time management is working smarter to increase productivity. In other words, time management means how you plan to spend time on specific activities to get maximum results (Mancini, 2003). An effective manager must know how to manage time.

Here are the reasons why time management skill is mandatory for a manager:

  • Greater productivity and efficiency

The biggest advantage of time management is it increase the productivity and efficiency. A manager can get maximum more efficiently if he is good at managing time. If one can manage time properly, then he can save precious time. Tasks take less time and maximum output is generated.

  • Less Stress

If a manager is good at time management then it will decrease his stress. He’ll be facing fewer stress, fewer deadlines and more spare time which subsequently will decrease stress.

  • More Opportunities and Better Reputation

If a manager is good at time management then he will on top of his work. It will produce more opportunities for him. It is said that an early bird always has more options. Moreover, time management reputation of manager will be key in his progress and promotion.

In short, time management is very necessary for an effective manager. It will enable him to get greater productivity and efficiency from his team. He will be able to get the tasks done in assigned time which will obviously save him from stress. Effective time management will increase the morale of the manager and his team. Better time management helps in better planning, organizing and eventually better forecasting. Moreover, it will save the manager from anxiety and stress and help them in getting a promotion.


Self-motivation is the ability to complete the assigned task, without taking someone’s influence or supervision (Motivation Skills, 2010). An effective must be self-motivated and must possess the ability to motivate his sub-ordinates. Usually, self-motivated managers are influenced by their background, education and personalities. Self-motivated managers are different in chasing their goals than those who are less self-directed.

Managers who possess the skill of self-motivation are usually friendly, positive, and a good communicator. Self-motivated managers are confident and they project that energy, confidence, and enthusiasm in the whole team. It improves the overall performance of the team. Self-motivated managers are usually very resilient and they are more likely to bounce back from the failure. They are goal orientated and they don’t need repetitive reminders. Such managers set goals for themselves and their team (BUBLE, JURAS, & MATIC, 2014).

Self-motivated managers usually perform better than those who are less self-directed. Such managers are effective managers because they view problems as challenge and opportunities and motivate their team to give their best. An important characteristic linked with self-motivation is self-evaluation. Effective managers continuously evaluate their performance and look for options to improve it. (Suttle)

An effective manager must be self-motivated because companies prefer those individuals who are responsible and need less supervision. Self-motivated managers look for the bigger picture which makes them necessary for the progress of the company. Employers prefer those who don’t need much of supervision.

Conflict Resolution

Conflict resolution or dispute resolution is finding a possible peaceful solution, among a group or individuals, over a dispute. There are several reasons behind the dispute such as political, personal or emotional. However, in the case of dispute, best possible action is to negotiate and resolve the issue (Duggan).

Conflict is an inevitable part of a workplace. In any organization, there are different people working who have different backgrounds. So, it is natural that they might disagree on something and dispute arises. The dispute can be severe or mild depending on the reason of the conflict. However, an effective manager should stop the conflict from getting severe and look for solutions. An effective manager, who possess the skill of conflict resolution, can resolve the conflict and eliminate the hidden problems behind the conflict (Kohlrieser, 2007).

An effective manager must be able to bring all parties to the table. In other words, it must be realized that there exist a conflict among need which must be solved. The manager must listen to the opinion of both parties carefully. He must gather information, opinions, backgrounds and concerns before going for the solution. All parties must be included in the process of conflict resolution and it depends upon the manager how effectively he does that. So, a manager must focus on the positive outcome to keep the positive work environment. Companies prefer those managers who are good at resolving conflicts. (Ilgaz, 2014)


An effective manager is a broad term. In this paper, we have discussed this term with its relation to few skills of effective managers. It is a common observation that few managers perform much better than their counterparts. The reason behind this is that managers who possess few specific skills perform better. These skills are time management, self-motivation, and conflict resolution. It is very important for an effective manager that he manages his time in such a way that he can get the job done in assigned time with best results. In other words, if a manager manages the time effectively than he can increase the productivity and efficiency of his team. Self-motivation is also an important skill which every effective manager must have. Last but not the least, the skill of conflict resolution is very important to keep a positive environment at the workplace. A manager must have these skills if he wishes to be an effective manager.
